February is National Canned Food Month! 🥫🥣

Did you know, when we open canned goods to serve fruit or vegetables, we need to open 50 cans to cover one meal at each building? We also make soup each day, mainly from scratch, and used canned vegetables to boost flavor and nutrition! Some of our most needed canned good items are: Corn, peas, mixed vegetables, lima beans, peached, pears, and pineapple!

Check out our website below if you`d like to get involved by providing canned goods for Gateway Mission! https://www.hopefoundhere.org/give-help-donation-volunteer-partner/current-needs-donations/

For the past 3 years a local salon has invited the ladies of the Gateway Mission Forge program, to a night of food, pampering, and fun. Each of the ladies could get their haircut, styled or both and get their nails done. This was their way of giving back to the community.
Because of nights like this, the ladies see hope in their futures, they are looking for life change and are transforming their lives, and they are pursuing a life with God as their savior.

A few of the ladies shared the impact it had on them –

Krista – My long curly hair which hadn’t been cut in many years, I associated w/my past way of life. A life of Idolatry, Idolism, addiction, and despair. Recently I chose to have it all cut off into a short new style. Now I feel I am representing my new way of life, in Christ. It’s a new year w/a new cut, new growth and a new me! The old has gone, the new has come. Thank you to the salon. Thank you gateway and thank you Jesus.

Lisa – Thank you so much to the ladies of the salon! Haircuts, nails and pizza, a true blessing to all the women in the Forge program. I am so grateful for the salon supporting the community.

Lethea – God is real, I am grateful for gateway. The ladies at the salon touched me in a good way, they helped me see I’m worthy.

“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland. Isaiah 43:18-19

Last Friday, we had a woman move into permanent stable housing! She is able to pay for it all on her own, no housing voucher. She wrote this note for the staff, “I just want to thank all the staff for helping me with a lot. And I really appreciate you letting me stay at Gateway Mission. Living here just pushed me more to get myself together. Now I got my place and I’m so excited. Thank you for the help & support. Thank you.” – L

Praise God!

January is Poverty Awareness Month. One of the questions we get frequently is, "who is commonly affected by homelessness?" They are real people who often have horror stories of trauma and abandonment. A better term to describe the homeless could be “relation less” rather than homeless. This situation could be your very own mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, grandmothers, and grandfathers. You could be the person living in poverty after reeling from just one traumatic event in your life. Our hope and prayer is that everyone who walks through the doors of Gateway Mission sees their value and worth in Jesus Christ.

We were created to live in a community with relationships, not alone and isolated. Our lives are designed to be filled with people. People to love, people to honor, people to care for, people to laugh with, cry with, and simply be together. We clearly see this throughout scripture: “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” (Gal 6:2) In God’s design from the beginning, God instructed His people to help others, take care of the poor, and be mindful of people in your community. Sadly, many people drift into isolation, believing the lie that they will be safer and happier when in reality it makes a situation much worse without these God-ordained relationships.

January is Poverty Awareness Month! Read below to learn more about the root cause of homelessness…⬇️

We are all faced with people experiencing homelessness. Maybe it is someone we know or the familiar panhandler on the corner. We must see the homeless population as real people – not addicts or drunks or prostitutes. Instead, they are people made in the image of God. People experiencing homelessness are indeed some of the most vulnerable Americans living in poverty. Half a million Americans are homeless. Notably, lack of connection to a church or religious community increases homelessness. A report of The Council of Economic Advisors states, "The lifetime incidence of homelessness is reduced by 60 percent for individuals with strong ties to family, religious communities and friends." At Gateway Mission, we believe God has called us to serve as a gateway to a whole new life for hurting people across West Michigan. With love and respect – we offer these men and women – and their families – help discovering God`s plan for them and a more hopeful future.
